AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam (OPS) asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to curb any action being taken towards the ‘Away from Reactor’ storage facility to be constructed at Kudankulam Nuclear Plant (KKNP).
OPS stated that Unit 1 and 2 of KKNP are producing 2000 MegaWatt of power which is being shared by Tamil Nadu with Karnataka and Puducherry, while 15 per cent is provided to the Central Grid.
Already, the plan to construct a nuclear waste facility was stopped after people from the region protested and when plans were drafted to utilise the unused Kolar Gold Mines as ‘Deep Geological Repository’, it was halted after people’s protest in Karnataka.
OPS then cautioned that with construction work in progress for Unit 3, Unit 4 and with plans being drafted for constructing Unit 5 and Unit 6, tenders will be open to apply from February 24 for construction for the ‘Away From Reactor’ storage facility and claimed that it is extremely distressing and will harm the people in the area.
“Neither ‘Away From Reactor’ facility nor Deep Geological Repository should be allowed to be constructed in Tamil Nadu and urged CM Stalin to take the necessary steps to stop any action towards such plans,” OPS stated.
