Sterling Shepard signing with Buccaneers in Baker Mayfield reunion after Giants exit
NY Post
When Sterling Shepard earlier this week received a text message from Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, it was nothing Shepard found out of the ordinary.
The two were teammates at Oklahoma and remain good friends.
Little did Shepard know that the wheels were in motion to get him back onto the field after he spent eight years with the Giants and figured his playing career was likely over.
“I got a text from my boy and I just thought it was ‘regular old checking in to see how I was doing’ type of text, because we do that from time to time to each other,’’ Shepard told the Post on Thursday.
Aaron Judge had an Opening Day negotiating deadline in 2022 when he was coming up on the final year of his contract before free-agent eligibility, and that seems to have worked out just fine for No. 99 — perhaps the first time ever in a hockey column that numeral does not refer to Wayne Gretzky — and the Yankees.
