Sri Lankan family with two-month-old infant lands on Indian coast seeking refuge

A Sri Lankan family of five, including a two-month-old infant, arrived on the Tamil Nadu coast seeking refuge on Monday, May 2. A total of 80 Sri Lankan Tamils have crossed the sea and come to Tamil Nadu since the economic crisis began.
Due to the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, several Tamils have decided to risk their lives and cross the sea to reach the Tamil Nadu coast to survive. A total of 80 Sri Lankan Tamils have crossed the sea seeking refuge since the crisis began.
On early Monday morning, May 2, another family of five including a mother carrying her two-month-old infant crossed the sea and reached the coast of Tamil Nadu on a fibre boat.
The family from Vavuniya had left Sri Lanka from Neduntheevu region. They were rescued by Marine Police and were taken to Marine Police station for questioning.
Latha, who was carrying her two-month-old baby in her arms, stated that the situation was extremely bad in Sri Lanka. “A tin of milk powder costs Rs 2,000 and the necessary vaccines for the baby are not available in government hospitals. If the situation continues, people will die of starvation,” she said.
So far, 80 Sri Lankan Tamils have crossed the sea seeking refuge in Tamil Nadu since the crisis began.
After questioning, the family was then moved to Mandapam refugee camp.
