
Sri Lankan crisis is serious matter, India’s focus is on helping them: EAM S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said the economic crisis in Sri Lanka is a serious matter and India is focused on helping its neighbour.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday called the economic crisis in Sri Lanka a “serious matter” and said India’s focus at the moment is on helping them. He added that India is making all its efforts to support “our neighbours in a way which meets their requirements according to PM Modi’s ‘neighbourhood first’ policy”.
Jaishankar said India had earlier given Sri Lanka a line of credit which kept essential commodities flowing to them for the past several months. “We've also provided them with a line of credit for the purchase of fuel. This year alone, we have pledged $3.8 billion in support to Sri Lanka,” added the minister.
He further said there are bigger issues in Sri Lanka pertaining to how one manages its finances and maintains a prudent fiscal policy.
The Indian High Commission in Colombo denied the reports of India sending troops to Sri Lanka. The official handle of the commission on Twitter wrote, “The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India clearly stated today that India stands with the people of Sri Lanka as they seek to realise their aspirations for prosperity and progress.”
The High Commission would like to categorically deny speculative reports in sections of media and social media about India sending her troops to Sri Lanka. These reports and such views are also not in keeping with the position ofthe Government of India. (1/2)
