Chris Silverwood, who was sacked as England coach after their 4-0 Ashes drubbing earlier this year, will take over as Sri Lanka national men's team coach on a 2-year contract.
Sri Lanka on Saturday announced the appointment of former England men's team head coach, Chris Silverwood as the head coach of their senior national men's team on a 2-year contract. Silverwood's first assignment with Sri Lanka will be a 2-Test series in Bangladesh in May.
Silverwood was sacked by England after Joe Root's men were hammered 0-4 in the Ashes in Australia earlier this year. Sri Lanka have been without a full-time coach after Mickey Arthur left the role in November last year.
Silverwood was appointed as Head Coach of England’s Men’s team in October 2019, having previously been the England Men’s bowling coach working under then Head Coach Trevor Bayliss when England won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.
Silverwood played six Tests and seven ODIs for England and played county cricket for Yorkshire and Middlesex.
The 47-year-old English tactician had a tough job in hand as Sri Lanka are on a slide across all formats of the game. The islanders were outclassed 2-0 in a recently-concluded Test series in India following before which they were blanked 3-0 in a T20I series.
Silverwood said he is looking forward to get down to Colombo and start working with the talented bunch of Sri Lanka cricketers after the appointment was made official.
"I am very excited to be on board with Sri Lanka and I cannot wait to get over to Colombo and get started. They have a talented and passionate group of players and I am really looking forward to meeting up with the players and coaching staff very soon," said Chris Silverwood in a release by Sri Lanka Cricket.
