Special weather statement issued for P.E.I.'s Prince County due to weekend storm

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Prince County in connection with an early spring storm coming this weekend, but CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin warns that nowhere on P.E.I. will get off lightly.
"It's not a great weekend at all to be going anywhere," Simpkin said Friday morning, the first day of March break for Island schools.
"It's not going to be pleasant. The wickedest weather will come Saturday night into Sunday morning."
There will be strong winds, with gusts to 70 km/h, and a lot of precipitation. In anticipation of the wind, the Confederation Bridge website was warning Friday morning that traffic might have to be restricted.
It is too early to say where the rain/snow line will settle, Simpkin said, but she thinks it will be somewhere over the Island with snow to the west, in Prince County.
Environment Canada says there could be 15 to 25 centimetres of snow there. In other areas, five to 15 centimetres will fall before the change to rain overnight Saturday. That changeover comes with a risk of freezing rain and ice pellets.
For people travelling, Simpkin warns there could be record-breaking snowfalls in New Brunswick this weekend.
She said the precipitation could shift back to snow Sunday afternoon, again with a risk of freezing rain and ice pellets during the transition.
