P.E.I. could find itself under snowfall warnings before the end of the week.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement in the face of a storm threatening the Island Thursday.
The forecast is for the snow to start late Thursday and continue into Friday. The total could run between 10 and 20 centimetres. Any forecast over 15 centimetres would prompt a snowfall warning.
CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin said this will be a persistent system.
"It's going to be overhead for a while," said Simpkin.
"It's going to keep the clouds in the forecast Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and the chances for snow, periods of snow, then changing to periods of rain during the afternoons as the temperatures rise above freezing. But the snow could accumulate over time."
Accumulations of snow are more likely in higher elevations, she said.
With temperatures remaining above freezing the snow is likely to be very wet and heavy. The snowfall will combine with strong easterly winds, which could bring down tree branches and lead to power outages.
On the brighter side, the forecast for the eclipse this coming Monday is looking promising.
The storm should clear out by then, and there is some sunshine in the forecast.
