A gang of smugglers attacked a BSF patrolling party near the India-Bangladesh border on Sunday morning. One smuggler was killed in retaliatory action.
An alleged smuggler was killed in an encounter with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near the international border between India and Bangladesh in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Sunday morning.
BSF officials said a group of smugglers attacked a jawan while smuggling Phensedyl, following which forces retaliated. One smuggler was killed in the ensuing exchange.
The incident took place on Sunday morning in the area of Border Out Post Sagarpara, 141 Battalion where a patrolling party was alert for suspicious activity after receiving reliable inputs from the BSF's intelligence department.
Around 3 am in the morning, troops observed the movement of 10-15 smugglers in the area, and informed the patrolling party. Shortly afterwards, the smugglers attacked the jawans using stones and dah (an edged weapon). The jawans also started retaliatory action.
The BSF personnel first tried to drive away the smugglers with a non-lethal weapon, but when it had no effect, he was compelled to use his personal weapon in self-defence, said a BSF officer. Shots were fired and a smuggler was killed. The other smugglers fled under the cover of darkness, leaving their injured accomplice behind.
The jawans seized 532 bottles of Phensedyl from the smugglers. The deceased smuggler has been identified as Indian national Rohil Mandal, a resident of Murshidabad.
