Small pets will soon be allowed on London's public transit, but there is a condition

The London Transit Commission (LTC) is going to allow small pets on board, with one stipulation.
A recommendation to amend the LTC's current animal policy was approved during a board meeting Wednesday night. Small domestic pets can now ride on London public transit services only if they are in a fully enclosed cage carrier that can either be held in the lap of the rider or fit under the seat at their feet where they sit or stand.
"Mitigating the impact to services by having the smaller domestic pets was the best way to go," said LTC director of operations Shawn Wilson during the board meeting.
The recommendation was made following a review of best practices and of incidents involving pets on transit, said Wilson.
The previous policy refused pets of any kind on board, aside from service animals.
In September, a London woman submitted a proposal to the LTC board arguing that not allowing pets on board was discriminatory to low income pet owners who rely on public transit.
In response, the LTC board directed its staff to look into how other transit authorities handle animals.
The new rules come into effect March 1.
