Travis Head had opened Australia's innings with Aaron Finch during the ODI series against Pakistan after David Warner skipped the ODI leg of the tour.
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald on Sunday said that Travis Head has to "bide his time at the moment" as David Warner has returned to take the opener's spot in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Head had opened the innings with captain Aaron Finch during the ODI series against Pakistan after Warner skipped the ODI leg of the tour. Head was the second highest run-scorer with a century and a fifty in three innings for Australia.
Head carried his form and registered a hundred for Australia A in Sri Lanka. However, McDonald said Warner's return meant Head has to wait for his turn.
"He (Head) just has to bide his time at the moment," McDonald was quoted as saying.
"We see it as an opportunity for him to get some really good match opportunities within that A Game building into the test series. That's equally important as well, his exposure to the sub-continent conditions."
Head was named Man of the Series during Australia's Ashes victory against England earlier this year. The left-hander is expected to repeat his heroics in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka later this month.
"We're not saying that he won't play any part in the ODI series. He got an opportunity in Pakistan and took that with some brilliant ball-striking, which was seen by all.
