Ontario's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a 35-year-old was seriously injured after he was shot by an Ontario Provincial Police officer in Seaforth, Ont., a community an hour's drive north of London.
The injured man is in custody while a second suspect is still at large, as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Huron County OPP.
Police said reports of a stolen vehicle touched off the chain of events on Wednesday morning. Officers located the suspect vehicle and followed it to a driveway at an undisclosed address in Seaforth. The shot came after the officers approached the vehicle, according to investigators.
"OPP officers interacted with two individuals. As a result of the interaction, one person was injured, and one person remains outstanding," provincial police said in a news release Wednesday.
The suspect vehicle fled and later, a man was dropped off at a hospital in Clinton. The suspect vehicle left the hospital and soon after struck another vehicle and was later abandoned, the SIU said.
The normally quiet communities of Clinton and Seaforth were both filled with a heavy police presence throughout the day on Wednesday.
The incident spurred the Avon Maitland District School Board to 'hold and secure' students at two schools, including Clinton Public School and Central Huron Secondary School.
The measures since ended and schools were dismissed as usual, said Chera Longston a spokesperson for the AMDSB.
A notice on the Huron Perth Health Alliance's website said Clinton Public Hospital and Transition House were also in hold and secure.
Police said there is currently no imminent threat to public safety, and the SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.
The SIU invokes its mandate whenever there is a situation involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online here.
