India captain Rohit Sharma has spoken about his approach to captaincy as India start off their preparation for Asia Cup. The team play their first game vs Pakistan.
India captain Rohit Sharma broke down his captaincy method on Friday, 19 August. The official broadcaster for the Asia Cup, Star Sports released a teaser on Friday which saw the Indian captain talk about his approach to leadership. Sharma, who has enjoyed a fine captaincy run since taking over the team from Virat Kohli said that for him, it was all about giving his players freedom and specifying roles.
India have not been able to play their best combination in the tournaments owing to injuries and workload management of the senior players, but are expected to play the core unit, starting the Asia Cup. Barring the injuries to pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, India have all the top players in their ranks as they prepare for their first game against Pakistan on 28 August.
In a teaser from Star Sports show Follow the Blues, Sharma said that he is emulating the same method that he followed with the Mumbai Indians for years, one that made the Mumbai side one of the best ever in the tournament.
“What I've done over the years with the Mumbai Indians franchise and also the time that I have led India all over the world, is keeping it very very simple and not complicating things too much. Making sure that whatever I have spoken of before about giving the guys freedom and making them understand what their role is, that is what I will be expecting of myself,” he said.
“That is what I want to do for the team and for the other players and make sure that there is no confusion. That's the last thing you want especially before you are playing a high profile tournament. So we want to make sure that all of that is taken care of and that is where my role becomes very very crucial along with Rahul Dravid. We will try and keep focus on that, the both of us. But for me it is very simple,” he further added.
India have had a clear shift of approach since Rohit took over the T20I side, and have shown a very different approach, at least in terms of the batting unit. While it is yet to be seen if India stick to the same in th World Cup, but the hopes will be high once again when India take the field Down Under.
