Shelters at the ready as another cold weather alert issued for London, Ont.

The Ark Aid Street Mission in London will continue to run its downtown winter response site this weekend to accommodate as many people as possible as temperatures are expected to plunge Friday night.
The forecasted extreme cold has prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) to issue its second cold weather alert of the week. Environment Canada is forecasting a low of -25 C, feeling more like -32 with the windchill. The daytime high on Saturday is expected to reach -10 C and then back down to -16 C on Saturday night.
City of London officials told CBC News the 300 bed shelter response, the winter response sites and all existing resting spaces that have been expanded for this winter are also continuing this weekend.
"In addition, other organizations are stretching their spaces the best they can. We understand there are still vacant rooms in some organizations and rooms for women specifically at partner agencies that are currently available," the statement read.
Last weekend, the city and social service agencies had to deploy two city buses to keep people from freezing on London's streets, though there no word if they will have to resort to such measures again as the Ark Aid Street Mission will also be using their space on Dundas Street.
"At these extremely low temperatures and windchill values, the risk of cold-related illness and injuries like frostbite is very real," said David Pavletic, the Environmental Health Manager with the MLHU.
"Please limit the time you spend outdoors over the next couple of days, and if you must be outside, protect yourself by dressing appropriately in multiple layers, covering exposed skin, and drinking warm fluids that are not caffeinated or alcoholic."
The city will also have a warming centre available at the Central Library Branch, 251 Dundas Street, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The cold weather alert will remain in effect until Sunday morning.
