A shelter-in-place order has been lifted for an area of central St. John's, after at least three people were detained in relation to what police called a weapons offence.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary told residents of Golf Avenue, Ricketts Road, St. Clare Avenue and Army Street to shelter in place around 11:20 a.m.
Shortly after noon Wednesday, over a dozen police vehicles surrounded a house on the corner of Golf Avenue and St. Clare Avenue. Several officers crouched behind their squad cars, rifles drawn and pointed at the front door of the residence.
On a megaphone, officers demanded the occupants come out of the house with their hands up.
Minutes later, at least three people — two men and one woman — exited the building peacefully and were detained.
Several officers then entered the house, photographing the inside.
It's not yet clear exactly why police surrounded the residence. RNC Const. James Cadigan told CBC News he will release more details as they become available.
The RNC says its presence in the area will remain as officers continue to investigate.
