Doha, Qatar: The 10th Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding has concluded its foreign tours which come within the framework of enhancing communication with cultures related to the selected languages in each edition.
The latest tours held by the award’s media team in Nigeria came to introduce about the reality of translation between the Arabic language and the Yoruba language, on the occasion of the selection of “Yoruba” among the languages chosen in the achievement category of the 10th edition of the award.
The tour included a number of meetings and cultural events, where the delegation met with representatives of academic institutions and translation institutes in Nigeria, coordinated by the Nigerian Centre for Arab Research.
The delegation learned about the experience of the Nigerian Translation Institute, which employs more than 400 translators between international languages and Nigerian languages, and work is currently underway to develop a dual dictionary between the two languages.
The award delegation also met with representatives of the Centre for International Studies at the prestigious University of Ilorin and a number of Arabic language graduates from the university’s translation institute, in addition to the language departments. They have about ten translated works, hoping to cooperate with the award to establish a department for simultaneous translation.
