Bangladesh on Thursday appointed Shakib Al Hasan as their Test captain after Mominul Haque quit the role last month. Litton Das has been named vice-captain.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday appointed all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as their new Test captain after Mominul Haque stepped down from the role last month. Shakib will captain Bangladesh in the longest format of the game for the 3rd time.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan confirmed the development in a press conference on Thursday. Meanwhile, BCB has appointed Litton Das as the vice-captain of the Test team.
This is 35-year-old Shakib's 3rd stint as Bangladesh's Test captain. The leading all-rounder first took over the top job in 2009 and continued in the post till 2011 when he was sacked from the job after a series loss to Zimbabwe. Shakib returned to lead Bangladesh in Tests in 2017, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim and remained in the role until he was suspended by the International Cricket Council for failing to report corrupt approaches.
Mominul Haque stepped down as Bangladesh Test captain last month after they lost to Sri Lanka 1-0 in a home Test series. The middle-order batter was going through a lean patch, managing just 11 runs in 3 innings against the islanders.
Shakib will begin his 3rd stint as captain when Bangladesh tour West Indies for a 2-Test series later this month. BCB president Hassan said Shakib has given his full commitment to play all three formats of the game.
"We have a series against Zimbabwe after the West Indies. He may not be there. Other than this, he gave us a commitment he would play in all formats in future series, but it's difficult to say for how long Shakib will be leading the side," Hassan said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
"We had three names in our hands. If Shakib was not interested we would chosen the duo from the three available option."
