Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for western P.E.I.
The watch was issued just before 4 p.m. AT Friday.
"Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," the statement said. "Severe thunderstorms are possible over northern Prince County late this afternoon and this evening."
Environment Canada said large hail has the potential to damage cars and other property, as well as injure people.
"Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road...," the watch statement said. "Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water."
Speaking of water, CBC P.E.I. meteorologist Jay Scotland said the weekend will be a wet one even after the thunderstorm watch ends.
Showers overnight will be followed by a cloudy Saturday with periods of rain and the potential for locally heavy downpours, he said late Friday afternoon. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with showers and periods of rain possible, especially in the morning.
