Sentencing hearing expected for owner of dogs who fatally attacked Calgary woman

The owner of three Calgary dogs that got loose and fatally mauled a woman in 2022 will be sentenced Monday.

The owner of three Calgary dogs that got loose and fatally mauled a woman in 2022 will be sentenced Monday.

In February, Dennis Bagaric agreed to have one of his pets euthanized and pleaded guilty to two out of 12 bylaw charges.

The charges included one count of allowing an animal to attack a person and cause severe injury, and one count of allowing animals to run at large.

On June 5, 2022, Bagaric’s American Staffordshire Breed dogs – Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki – were in the backyard of his property on 21 Avenue N.W., when the canines broke free of the fenced backyard into the alley where Williams was gardening.

Williams suffered critical injuries and she later died from in hospital.

Prior to this incident, court documents say there were no signs of aggression, trauma or past abuse from Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki.

However, all three dogs were surrendered to the City of Calgary and Smoki was euthanized as it was the dog believed to have caused the severe injuries that led to Williams' death.
