Dozens of people gathered outside Riverview Health Centre Sunday night to ring in the new year.
A short fireworks display drew a lively crowd of community members from the area and residents watched on with excitement both in and outside of the building.
"It's a party time, it's a new beginning," said Irv Kroeker, 85, a resident at Riverview Health Centre.
Kroeker said he'd first heard about the fireworks a couple months ago and had been looking forward to them ever since. He also said it was nice to see all the people who came from the community to catch a glimpse of the show.
"We always used to watch the fireworks at The Forks and we lived in Fort Garry Place and we could see them from our balcony," Kroeker said, while recalling past New Year's Eve celebrations.
He said he also has fond memories of New Year's Eve traditions with family.
"When our kids were growing up we always called each other right after midnight and sometimes we couldn't get through because everybody else wants to do it," he said. "The phone lines at that time, they were landlines and we always phoned each other after midnight."
This is the fourth year the fireworks display at Riverview has taken place. The bright lights light up the sky from three different locations on the Morley Avenue property.
The shows have been sponsored by commercial realtor Cushman & Wakefield/Stevenson in memory of Patricia McGarry, who received care there.
Bridgette Parker, executive director of the Riverview Health Centre Foundation said there was plenty of excitement in the air in the lead up to the event. She also said it was the biggest attendance she'd seen so far.
"Now that we've done it for a number of years, folks really look forward to it," she said. "And we were in the building today delivering hot chocolate and cookies thanks to the McGarry family as well and there was a lot of questions and a lot of buzz in the building about the fireworks happening tonight."
Outside the building there were cheers and rounds of applause as the popping of fireworks lit up the night. Many posed for photos too, some scrambling to get the best view.
And as for Kroeker, he said staying up until the first minutes of the new year would be a decision by committee.
