Semblance of spring has London set to smash temperature record today

London appears poised to smash a record today, as spring-like conditions appear set to deliver double-digit, above-zero temperatures.
The record for Feb. 9 in London is 9.8 C. Friday's forecast high? A parka-peeling 14 C.
"Friday is really unusual in terms of the temperature, usually in London we see maximum high temperatures of -2 C and we're really far from that," said Trudy Kidd, a metrologist with Environment Canada.
Kidd said the record was set back in 2001. A low-pressure system is to blame — or thank depending on your perspective — for the unseasonably warm weather.
"It's bringing a lot of warm air from the south with it, that's where this warm air is coming from," she said.
Kidd said while it's too early to say how much of this week's mild weather can be attributed to climate change, she said it's likely playing a significant role.
"From our experience so far, it's likely a factor," she said.
For people out enjoying the mild temperatures at Victoria Park on Thursday, the warm weather was met with a mix of enjoyment and unease.
Bob Crozier took advantage of the sunny skies to talk a walk. Wearing a light spring coat, he noticed the Canada Geese drinking from water that had melted the ice at the park's skating rink.
"It's surprising that the ice rink is closed because it's too warm," he said. "So it's probably this is not great for everyone who likes skiing and skating."
Nathan Botten was out taking his two small dogs for a walk. The dogs usually have to wear sweaters at this time of year, but were able to go without them on Thursday.
"I like the weather but I think it's cause for concern because of climate change," said Botten. "it's kind of concerning," he said. "I remember in my childhood, we'd be covered in snow. I'm a bit unsettled by it. It's too warm, it's Canada. it's supposed to be cold and February so it's a little weird."
Regardless of whether you find this week's run of warm weather is fun or frightening, it's not going to last.
Kidd said by next week we'll be back to our normal seasonal daily high.
