Congress MLA calls for renaming Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department in Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Congress MLA K. Selvaperunthagai urged the Tamil Nadu government in the Assembly to replace ‘Hindu’ with ‘Tamil Nadu’ or ‘Temples’ in the name of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department.
He said the department should be renamed the Tamil Nadu Charitable Endowments Department or the Temples Charitable Endowments Department.
“The word ‘Hindu’ is not in any literature. The British, for administrative reasons, have changed the ‘Indus’ in the Indus Valley Civilization’ to ‘Hindu’,” Mr. Selvaperunthagai contended. Urging the HR and CE Department for changing the nomenclature, he said: “Because times are changing, and history is changing, this too should be changed. Because some are trying to do politics over this.”

When reporters brought to her notice the claim by villagers that the late maharaja of Mysore Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar had gifted the land to them, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said she is not aware of the matter, but sought to assure people that no effort will be made to take back the land that had been gifted by the late maharaja.
