The Airports Authority of India (AAI) team, which concluded the inspection of three locations that have been identified for Bengaluru’s second international greenfield airport, is expected to submit a feasibility report within a month, according to Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil on Thursday.
Mr. Patil said that the AAI team inspected the locations, of which two were on Kanakapura Road and one on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road.
After receiving feedback from the AAI team, he said a feasibility report would be prepared followed by a detailed study which would be undertaken by expert consultants specialising in airport infrastructure development.
“Based on this, the government will finalise the location for the airport,” said Mr. Patil.
He added that various factors would come into consideration and the consultants would study parameters such as the location of the airport, passenger load, cargo load, accessibility, among others, before giving the final nod.
The second airport for Bengaluru could only become operational after May 2033, owing to an agreement between the Bangalore International Airport Ltd., which is the operator of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
As per the agreement, no airport can operate within an aerial distance of 150 km of KIA before its 25th anniversary which falls in May 2033.
