West Bengal has proposed financial assistance to the students who have returned from war-torn Ukraine. Interns will be allowed to continue their internship in government colleges after counseling, Mamata Banerjee said.
All students from the state who have returned from Ukraine following the Russian invasion will be accommodated in government and private medical colleges of the state, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said today. The state has also proposed financial assistance to the students. Interns will be allowed to continue their internship in government colleges after counseling, she said.
Engineering students were asked about their choices and demands by the chief minister. They sought financial help to transfer to Canada. Medical students have asked the state for financial help for readmission to private institutions as the fees are very high or for government quotas for seats in those colleges. Few said they are willing to study in state-run institutions in Kolkata. Nearly everyone raised their hands when Mamata Banerjee asked how many wanted to study in Bengal.
Students in the first year will be offered fresh admissions to medical colleges, the chief minister said, adding, she will request private medical colleges to allow second and third year students to enroll students if the National Medical Council permits. The state will also write to the medical council to allow students in the fourth, fifth and sixth years to practice in the state, she said.
“We are sending our proposal to the medical council in Delhi. If they allow our decisions, students of other states will also benefit. So let us bell the cat,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Hoping that the National Medical Council would allow her proposals, she said, “Why should the medical council object to our proposal? But if they do, I will take you all to them.”
