A police search is continuing Friday in northeast New Brunswick for a 47-year-old man after one person was shot and killed Thursday and another was injured.
New Brunswick RCMP said in a social media post at 7:15 a.m. that officers are continuing to look for Keith Martin in the Esgenoôpetitj First Nation area, about 37 kilometres northeast of Miramichi.
Police have asked people in the area to stay inside, keep doors locked and report any sightings of Martin to police immediately.
Martin is described as being about six feet two inches tall, with dark hair. He was last seen wearing a grey jacket, jeans and black winter hat and carrying a bag. Police said he had a bandage and blood on his forehead.
He is believed to have a firearm.
RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellette said in an interview Thursday evening that Neguac RCMP responded to a report around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday from a person who had been shot in Esgenoopetitj, also known as Burnt Church.
At the scene, police found a dead 48-year-old man and an injured man. The injured man was taken to hospital with what police described as non-life threatening injuries.
RCMP issued a provincewide emergency alert at 4 p.m. Thursday naming Martin as the suspect.
Horizon Health Network said on social media that access to the Miramichi Regional Hospital was restricted because of the search, though its emergency room remains open.
The school in Esgenoôpetitj was closed on Friday.
Community member Diana Simon said she found out at a police checkpoint on the highway Thursday night that someone had been hurt.
Simon said she was a retiree who used to work at the Esgenoopetitj band office.
"It comes as a shock," she said. "Usually it's pretty quiet here."
