The Supreme Court on Friday, June 24, dismissed the appeal by Zakia Jafri challenging an SIT report on the 2002 Gujarat riots case giving a clean chit to PM Narendra Modi, who was the CM back then, and 63 others. The court also upheld the decision of the Ahmedabad Metropolitan magistrate to accept the closure report.
Here is the timeline of the Zakia Jafri case:
February 28, 2002: A mob of over thousands attacked Gulbarg Society. As many 39 bodies were found there and 31 people were declared missing. An FIR was filed against 11 persons
November 21, 2003: Supreme Court stays judicial proceeding in nine cases after witnesses complained that the Gujarat Police was shielding the accused
March 26, 2008: Supreme Court constitutes a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by former CBI chief RK Raghavan to probe nine riot cases.
April 27, 2009: SC asks SIT to additionally 'look into the complaint' of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri's wife Zakia about the alleged role of Narendra Modi and others in her husband's killing
March 11, 2010: Modi issued a notice by the SIT to appear before it on March 21, to respond to allegations made against him
