The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the plea filed by Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi on April 1.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the plea filed by Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi against the Gujarat High Court's order dismissing his petition against Gujarat government's decision to redevelop Sabarmati Ashram project in Ahmedabad.
The CJI has scheduled the matter to be heard next week, on April 1.
A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and C T Ravikumar on Friday listed the matter for hearing after senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General of India, Indira Jaising mentioned the case before it.
Jaising, during the special mention, said that the reconstruction work can start soon. “Therefore, there is a need for a speedy hearing on this petition challenging the decision of the Gujarat High Court. I need a VC (virtual conference) day,” he said.
Accepting the application, the Chief Justice directed to list the case on the day of the virtual hearing.
Gandhi had filed a petition in the apex court last year against the Gujarat High Court's decision. The High Court had refused to entertain Tushar's plea and had dismissed his petition on November 25, 2021.
In the petition, citing many flaws in the redevelopment plan of the Gujarat government, the project had been requested to stop immediately. Gandhi argues that the manner in which the project is planned and implemented will adversely affect the pristine atmosphere of the ashram.
