A directorial venture of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Gangubai Kathiawadi has been riled up in controversies since it was announced. Now, in view of pending cases against the film, the Supreme Court has reportedly suggested a title change to the makers of Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Gangubai Kathiawadi was selected for world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival 2022. The film is set to hit the theatres this Friday, February 25. Bhansali Productions’ lawyer, Siddhartha Dave, has promised to discuss the suggestion with his client. The hearing will now continue tomorrow.
Among the cases filed against the film is the one by Gangubai's purported adopted son Babu Raoji Shah. The Bombay High Court had refused to stay the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi.Talking to AajTak.in, Babu Raoji Shah said, "My mother has been turned into a prostitute. People are now saying inexplicable things about my mother."
Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and a resident of Kamathipura also moved the Bombay High Court against the use of area name in Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Besides Alia Bhatt, Gangubai Kathiawadi also stars Ajay Devgn, Parth Samthaan, Shantanu Maheshwari and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles. The story is about a woman Ganga who travels from Gujarat to Mumbai with her partner, but gets sold off and pushed into prostitution. She then becomes a madame named Gangubai in the red light area of Kamathipura. The film follows her rise to power and fighting one challenge after another.
