The Supreme court on Thursday refused to give any protection to Rohingya refugees detained in Jammu, but directed that they cannot be deported without following proper procedure. The existence of the Rohingya refugee camps in Jammu has been a politically touchy issue for the last few years, with the Jammu administration taking steps to round up the "illegal immigrants" for deportation. A plea was moved before the Supreme Court by social worker Mohammad Salimullah, who had earlier also approached court on behalf of Rohingya refugees in Assam. The plea had sought a stay on the detentions, and release of the detained Rohingyas. It had also been argued that these people are not illegal immigrants but are valid refugees under the UN Convention on refugees.More Related News
