The City of Sault Ste. Marie is recommending to city council that the MS Norgoma, a former ship museum, be scrapped.
The Norgoma was moved from its former home downtown to a slip near Algoma Steel, where it has sat since 2019. Tom Vair, the city’s director of community development and enterprise services, said several attempts have been made to sell the ship.
"We've tried to find a new home for it with a number of different proponents and we haven't been able to do that," said Vair.
"This report is recommending that we decommission the vessel at a cost of $395,000."
Vair said that's what it will cost to dismantle the ship, adding the money will come from reserve funds. He said as of now, it costs the city upwards of $25,000 annually to keep the vessel where it is.
City council will decide the vessel's fate on Monday.
