DPAParisMaria Sakkari stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday to complete a set of unexpected womenâs semi-finalists at the French Open.Swiatek burst onto the global stage in October by winning her first grand slam title in spectacular style and found herself this time as the only player in the quarter-finals previously to have gone further at any slam. The Pole was on a winning streak at Roland Garros of 11 matches and 22 sets but a right thigh problem appeared to affect her as she fell to a defeat by 17th seed Sakkari, who is now the highest-ranked player left in the tournament. The 25-year-old Greek has been knocking on the door at slams for several years but has found the recipe for success here, beating both of last yearâs finalists in successive matches.Sakkari made a nervous start, with Swiatek moving into a 2-0 lead, but the Pole also looked a little tight and they were soon back on serve.Swiatek was not showing her usual clarity, hitting a lot of shots into the net, while Sakkari was beginning to dictate play with her powerful forehand. After breaking serve at 4-4, Sakkari held her nerve to serve out the set, and it was a glum-looking Swiatek who went to her chair at 2-0 down in the second to await the trainer. The 20-year-old, who has also played four doubles matches this fortnight, went off court and returned with her right thigh strapped and, although she kept pace with her opponent from there, Sakkari did not falter. In the last four, the Greek will take on unseeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova, who ended Coco Gauffâs hopes of reaching a first grand slam semi-final with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory. The 17-year-old Gauff has been in brilliant form on the clay and had cruised through to her first slam quarter-final but she was unable to take any of five set points in the opening set and faded badly afterwards. The disappointment for Gauff was evident as she made a poor start to the second set and she was unable to recover, smashing her racket forcefully on the court after a double fault left her 4-0 behind.Krejcikova, better known as a doubles player and also through to her first slam quarter-final in singles, blinked at the finish line as Gauff fought back from 5-0 to 5-3 but the Czech took her sixth match point.âI never really imagined that Iâm going to be standing here one day, standing on this court, especially singles. Being able to win, already for me this is something Iâve never dreamed of,â Krejcikova said.Gauff put the defeat into perspective, saying: âIâm obviously disappointed that I wasnât able to close out the first set. To be honest, itâs in the past, it already happened. After the match, Enzo, my hitting partner, told me this match will probably make me a champion in the future. I really do believe that.âThis one will be on my mind for a couple days, for sure. I think just reflecting on it, itâs over, so Iâm not going to say, âOh, if I did this, if I did thatâ. I think in the moment I did what I thought was the best decision and I have to stick on that.âMore Related News
