Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt Ltd Review: Amruta Subhash's brilliant performance makes you root for Suman

Amruta Subhash is the USP of Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt Ltd. The TVF series premiered on Zee5 on July 8.

"Rekhaaon ne toh sabki manzil tay kar rakhi hai, iska matlab yeh thodi na hai ki hum apna karm hi na karein (Fortune lines have already decided everyone's destination, but that doesn't mean we should not put effort)," tells Suman to the priest who sees her palm to predict her future. And, also to the viewers. As she is not someone who will blame her fate, give up and just sit back after going through a divorce.

TVF's new offering, Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt Ltd, premiered on Zee5 on July 8. The series is an inspiring tale of Suman (played by Amruta Subhash), who is a divorcee striving to set up her pickle business so she can get custody of her kids from her ex-husband, Dilip (played by Annup Sonii). But, Suman knows that she hasn't chosen an easy path. She couldn't take up a job as she was not educated and, as she says, all she knew was to take care of a household. With no options left, she decides to start a pickle business. Initially, Suman faces a lot of challenges since she lacks confidence. But her saas (mother-in-law), played by Yamini Das, is her constant support and cheerleader and hence, the title. She also has the support of her neighbour, Shuklaji, who aids her in setting up the business. Not to forget her grit and determination that helped her overcome the hurdles.

TVF is a master at realistic storytelling and their latest offering, Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt Ltd. is no different. Set in Daryaganj, the show takes you to the alleys and lanes of Old Delhi with smog covering the whole city in winter. Written by Abhishek Srivastava and Swarnadeep Biswas and directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, the 6-episode series has its heart in the right place. You tend to empathise with Suman, who was always taught to serve the 'raja babu' (read: husband), who would take care of all her needs. But, things go astray when that raja babu leaves her for another woman and now she is left alone to fend for herself.

The story has a few flaws but Amruta Subhash's performance will let you ignore them. The National Award-winning actress is brilliant as Suman. Meanwhile, Yamini Das will win your hearts as the supportive saas, who doesn't even hesitate to steal jewellery from her new daughter-in-law to finance her Sumaniya AKA Suman's achaar business. Her banter with Suman and Shukla ji adds humour to the show. But the makers could have added a few more light-hearted moments, as one tends to expect good tongue-in-cheek humour in a TVF show.

It was a welcome change to see Manisha (Anjana Sukhani), Dilip's second wife, not get typecast in a negative role. While Suman is seen struggling to make her achaar business click, it's Manisha who takes care of her kids, Juhi and Rishu. Anjana Sukhani is convincing as the sweet stepmother, who melts the audiences' hearts with her warmth and caring nature. Annup Sonii is a seasoned actor and is natural as Dilip. It doesn't take much effort to dislike his self-centered character. Anandeshwar Dwivedi as Shukla ji and Manu Bisht and Nikhil Chawla also played their parts well.
