Rahul Mahajan's wife and actress Natalya Ilina, who hails from Kazakhstan, has origins in both Russia and Ukraine. Natalya’s maternal grandmother was from Ukraine, while her maternal grandfather was Russian. Therefore, the current Russia-Ukraine crisis feels like her family is at war. Now in an exclusive conversation with IndiaToday.in, Natalya shares her thoughts on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and describes her friend's narrow escape from Kyiv (capital of Ukraine).
In a conversation with IndiaToday.in, Natalya stated that ever since the news of Russia attacking Ukraine broke, she hasn't been able to sleep or eat. She is extremely stressed, anxious and worried. She also spoke about her friend, who somehow managed to escape Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and reach Poland.
"I just got off a call with a friend of mine, who is like a sister to me. She had just managed to escape Kyiv via the border of Poland. She was in a bad condition. She was crying on the phone, and seeing her in this state, I was worried about her. I am just trying to get her out of Poland so that I can get her home to me, and take care of her. But this is just one person close to me. There are so many people struggling out there right now," said Natalya.
The current Russia-Ukraine crisis also moved her to pen a note on social media, where she shared her thoughts. Taking to Instagram, Natalya wrote, "My dadi was Russian and my dada was German. My nana was Russian and my nani was UkrainianMy family was basically formed as a child of WW2 where Russians were against Germans Right now, seeing Russian people against Ukrainian feels like family pushed to fight against their own family. My heart breaks into pieces. It’s hard to keep quiet and it’s hard to comment. I have overwhelming feelings about the situation and I keep checking the news and checking on my friends like family who are currently in Ukraine. I cannot take sides. I’m on the side of humanity. I’m Russian and I’m Ukrainian as much as I am German. My heart is with both. And all I wish and pray for is #peace and #nowar (sic)."
