In the course of a dramatic few hours on Monday evening, Putin declared Russia's recognition of the independence of two self-proclaimed and pro-Russian republics in eastern Ukraine, and then announced the deployment of Russian troops to the region on a "peacekeeping" mission.
Many people believe that sending troops into the so-called Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic — areas in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region backed by Russia — is a precursor to a full-scale invasion.
