
Russia sees historic population drop spurring demographic crisis amid war in Ukraine

Russia is in the midst of a historic population decline as it continues to grapple with infertility, high emigration, poor health statistics and the deadly war in Ukraine in what some have called Russia's "silent war."
Western defense officials have estimated that as many as 250,000 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine, and some reporting has suggested that up to 1 million people have fled Russia since the war began – particularly following Putin’s conscription order in September 2023.
