“Then, Princess Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of The Duke and Duchess of York and was never expected to become Queen. Her life changed in 1936 when her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicated, her father became King George VI and the young Princess became the heir presumptive. Following the sad death of her father in 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II aged just 25, and this year is celebrating 70 years on the throne - a first in British history,” the caption further read.
Ahead of her birthday, the Royal Family also shared a majestic portrait of the Queen with two of her ponies. Dressed in a dark green overcoat, the Queen exuded royal elegance as she posed in front of a lush green backdrop. She stood between the two white ponies, Bybeck Katie and Bybeck Nightingale, and was caught in a candid moment.
Queen Elizabeth II is also being honoured with a Barbie doll in her likeness to mark her Platinum Jubilee this year. This year, she marked 70 years on the throne. She ascended the throne on the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952.
