Rowdy detained for questioning dies at hospital in Chennai, family claims police brutality

A history-sheeter who was detained for questioning by Chennai Police died after undergoing treatment for a week at a hospital in the city. The family has alleged he died due to police brutality and claimed that it was a custodial death.
A 21-year-old man who was detained for questioning by Chennai Police and later let go died at a hospital in the city. The victim’s family has alleged that he died due to police brutality and claimed that it was a custodial death.
The deceased, 21-year-old Akash from Ayanavaram, was listed as a C-category rowdy. He had several pending cases in Otteri, Vyasarpadi, Kolathur and Puliyanthopu police stations.
On September 21, Akash was picked up by Otteri Police based on a complaint from a railway employee who stated that Akash had damaged his car. Police claim that Akash was then let go by 11 pm and was handed over to his sister Gayathri.
However, Gayathri claimed that Akash was unconscious and was taken to the Kilpauk Medical College hospital on September 22 where he underwent treatment for a week but unfortunately died on Thursday morning, September 29.
His family alleged that Akash died due to police brutality and called it a custodial death. They demanded a judicial probe into the matter.
