India Today
The Supreme Court on Friday came down heavily on suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma after she moved a plea to club multiple FIRs registered over her remarks on Prophet Muhammad. Here's what the court said.
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's plea to club multiple FIRs registered over her remarks on Prophet Muhammad and directed her to pursue other legal remedies.
As the vacation bench junked Nupur Sharma's petition, Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala made several observations upbraiding her for "disturbing" remarks against the Prophet, saying it has led to unfortunate incidents in the country.
Take a look at what the Supreme Court said about Nupur Sharma:
Refusing to entertain Nupur Sharma's petition, the bench asked her to approach the high court.
At the end of May, Nupur Sharma, who was then a spokesperson for the ruling BJP, made a comment on Prophet Muhammad in a TV debate. This sparked a massive outrage globally. At least 14 nations, including Qatar, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, slammed India over the comments.
The remarks also triggered violent protests across the country, with people calling for her arrest. Cases have been registered against Nupur Sharma for hurting religious sentiments in Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai.
In an attempt to control the damage, the BJP suspended Nupur Sharma from the party.
