Former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop said that Delhi Capitals star Rovman Powell promised his mother he would take them out of poverty when he was in secondary school.
Former West Indies bowler Ian Bishop shared a heartwarming story about how Delhi Capitals star Rovman Powell fulfilled a promise he made to his mother in his early days. Bishop said Powell, who comes from a humble background, had promised his mother when he was in school that he'd take them out of poverty, and the WI power-hitter is living that dream.
Powell earned an IPL contract with Delhi Capitals after impressing everyone with his performance against India. He was roped in by the Delhi Capitals for Rs 2.8 crore. Powell had a horror start to the tournament, but in the last couple of games, he has shown the world what he is capable of. After missing out on helping Delhi seal a thrilling chase against Rajasthan Royals, Powell made sure that DC secured two points against Kolkata Knight Riders.
"If anyone has the opportunity of 10 minutes to spare, go and look at Rovman Powell’s life story - a video on YouTube. You will see why so many people, including me, are happy that this guy has gotten a taste of the IPL. He has come from humble beginnings. He promised his mom that he would take them out of poverty when he was still in secondary school. He is living that dream of doing that. Great story," Bishop said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.
"I was trying to think back about his hundred against Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali in the Caribbean. He averaged 43 against India with these same spinners in India last February. He has improved a lot, is very good against seam and shows a great temperament.”
"I think Powell could sneak up that order. There is no reason why he cannot get in ahead of someone like a Lalit Yadav.”
