A gas leak in Cambridge has prompted the closure of an elementary school and at least six streets Thursday morning.
Waterloo regional police and the Cambridge Fire Department received a report of a gas leak at approximately 8:20 a.m. in the area of Roxboro Road and Dundas Street.
In an email to CBC News, police said the roads have since re-opened and there is no concern for public safety.
Police said a gas line was struck by a backhoe on Dundas Street, where construction work is currently taking place.
Crews with the fire department were checking gas levels in the area. Police said Enbridge Gas were also on scene and turned off multiple gas valves.
"There is no estimated timeline for the gas to be turned back on," police said.
Manchester Public School in Cambridge had to close as a result of the gas leak.
"Due to an emergency road closure caused by a gas leak in front of our school and in an abundance of caution, we have decided to close our school for learning today," the Waterloo Region District School board said in a release.
The school's before and after school programs were cancelled and students who take the bus were relocated to Avenue Road Public School, where parents caregivers were asked to pick up their children.
