RMC holds event to commemorate 150 years of India Meteorological Department

Celebrating 150 years of IMD with Everwin Group of Schools in Chennai, featuring student activities and historical exhibition.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, along with Everwin Group of Schools, on Wednesday organised an event here to celebrate 150 years of service of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This was one of the many events held over the year to commemorate the IMD’s 150th anniversary. Nearly 1,612 students organised themselves into a shape to form the words - ‘IMD 150.’
Students were involved in activities such as rally and face painting, emphasising aspects of the IMD, global warming and the need to protect the environment.
S. Balachandran, Additional Director-General of Meteorology, Chennai, who inaugurated the celebrations, elaborated on the evolution of the IMD and the development of various weather services over the decades that catered to different sections of society.
The RMC also held an exhibition on the IMD’s history and weather services. Models of automatic weather stations and instruments were on display. Besides the ongoing series of lectures, the RMC plans on conducting programmes for students and open house meetings.
