Five incumbent members of Parliament in northeastern Ontario have held onto their seats, and one new MP has been elected, as federal election results start coming into focus. Conservative Scott Aitchison has been re-elected in the riding of Parry-Sound Muskoka, NDP Carol Hughes has been re-elected in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, NDP Charlie Angus has been re-elected in Timmins-James Bay, Liberal Marc Serré has been re-elected in Nickel Belt, Liberal Anthony Rota has been re-elected in Nipissing-Timiskaning and Liberal Viviane Lapointe has been elected in Sudbury.
Parry-Sound Muskoka, the southernmost riding in northeastern Ontario was the fifth in the region to have a result declared by CBC. Aitchison was first elected in 2019 and was up against Liberal candidate Jovanie Nicoyishakiye, NDP candidate Heather Hay, Green Party candidate Marc Mantha, PPC candidate Jim Tole and Independent candidate Daniel Predie.
Aitchison said he is "thrilled, overwhelmed, and very excited" by the win. He said tackling housing issues in his riding will continue to be a top priority for him when he returns to Ottawa.
Aitchison said the need for affordable housing is "just as great here as it is in Canada's biggest cities," and he wants to make sure housing issues in rural areas aren't ignored.
"I know there's a lot of people struggling in Parry Sound-Muskoka, and to know that they have put their hopes and their faith in me, it's a humbling experience, and it's a sobering experience. And it means that I've got a lot of work to do to solve some of these problems and get things moving in Ottawa."
Meanwhile in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, the NDP's Hughes said she is "elated" to be re-elected for the fifth time. Highes has represented the riding since 2008. She was up against Conservative candidate John Sagman, Liberal candiate Duke Peltier, PPC candidate Harry Jaaskelainen, Green candidate Stephen Zimmermann and Christian Heritage Party candidate Clarence Baarda.
Hughes said she is ready to work with a Liberal government.
