Passengers at the Perumal Malai bus stop near Thuraiyur have raised concern over the lack of street lights.
Passengers have complained that they felt unsafe while waiting at the Perumal Malai bus stop near Thuraiyur, particularly at night, in the absence of adequate street lights.
Perumal Malai, known as the “Southern Tirupati,” is an important transit point for those travelling to Perambalur, Chennai, Thuraiyur, and Musiri.
Six high-mast lamps installed at the bus stop have not been functioning for a long time and passengers use mobile phone flashlights while waiting for buses. Waterlogging during rain worsens the situation for those waiting at the bus stop in view of the presence of venomous reptiles.
C. Balakumar, a resident of Keerambur, said: “Lack of lighting is a serious safety issue. Passengers are afraid to wait at night, especially during rain. Proper illumination is essential for public safety.”
Passengers and residents have urged authorities to visit the area at night, assess the situation, and ensure that street lights and high-mast lamps are repaired immediately.
An official from the Thuraiyur Rural Development department said he would look into the issue.
