Renault Kiger gets 4-star Global NCAP safety rating
India Today
Renault Kiger sub-4m compact SUV has achieved a 4-star rating from Global NCAP for adult occupant safety. It comes with dual front airbags as standard across all variants while the top-end trims get four airbags.
The Renault Kiger has been a success story for the French marque since its launch last year. It drove a resurgence for the brand supplemented by the Triber and the Kwid and also secured a top 5 finalist finish (final result pending) in the World Urban Car of the Year Category. Now the Kiger adds another feather to its cap, with a 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP for adult occupancy.
Based on the Renault-Nissan Common Module Family-A+ (CMFA+) platform, which also underpins the Renault Triber that also scored a 4-star rating, the Kiger provides impressive levels of crash protection to its occupants. Scoring 12.34 out of 17 points (4-star) for adult occupant protection and 21.05 out of 49 (2-star) for child occupant protection. However, its bodyshell integrity was described as "unstable". The Kiger’s sibling and competitor from Nissan, the Magnite, also scored a 4-star rating for adult protection scoring 11.85 out of 17 points, marginally lower than the Kiger.
Renault provides four airbags, front and side for the driver and co-driver, seat belts with pre-tensioner and load-limiter, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, impact sensing door unlock and speed sensing door lock and ISOFIX anchors in the top-end trims. The CMFA+ platform appears to offer a good amount of safety for the occupants, with the Kiger, Triber and Magnite all scoring a 4-star Global NCAP safety rating.
The tests were done under Global NCAP’s ‘Safer Cars for India Initiative’, and also tested the Honda Jazz and the Honda City 4th-gen sedan, both of which also secured a 4-star safety rating for adult protection.
Venkatram Mamillapalle, Country CEO & Managing Director, Renault India commented on the achievement, “Safety is of paramount importance for Renault and all our products meet and exceed the requisite safety standards set by Indian Regulatory Authorities. Kiger combines the best Renault has to offer: our expertise in innovative cars and in-depth knowledge of customer needs. Renault Kiger has been well accepted by the customers with the strong value proposition that it offers in terms of distinctive design, smart features, and performance. This is a proud moment for Renault in India, as Kiger was developed and produced in India, for Indian customers first, before we took it to the world. The 4-Star rating by GNCAP reiterates our commitment to bringing technologically advanced products which are safe yet trendy.”
