The real estate boom along the bypass connecting Mathur on Tiruchi-Pudukottai national highway and Panjapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai national highway has resulted in littering in the area, especially near the waterbodies.
The 11.2-km bypass links Panjapur and Mathur and the vehicular traffic is comparatively low here.
With several major projects such as the integrated bus terminus, truck terminal, Olympics academy, and IT park coming in Panjapur, the areas surrounding it have become hot property. A number of eateries and shops have come up in the area. A fallout of this real estate boom is that residents and businessmen dump garbage along the road. Rubbish can be seen strewn on the banks of the Korai and several small waterbodies in the area.
“Littering was rampant on the outer edge of the Edamalaipatti Pudur road leading to Panjapur and the Madurai highway until recently. It reduced considerably after the authorities took steps to stop dumping of trash in the area. It is sad to see that the problem had shifted to the opposite side of the road. While most of the areas under Tiruchi Corporation have shown an improvement in solid waste management, the link roads seem to be neglected. We have to protect the waterbodies from getting polluted with waste material,” Manoj Dharmar, an environmentalist, told The Hindu.
A senior Corporation official told The Hindu that the waste disposal problem on the Tiruchi Bypass had been taken note of and would be brought under control.
