Ranbir Kapoor's much-publicised return to the big screen with Shamshers is tanking at the ticket windows. Here's a look at how his last five films fared on the opening weekends.
Ranbir Kapoor’s first film in four years, Shamshera, is underperforming at the box office. The film opened to very low numbers at the box office, earning just Rs 10 crore. It has failed to live up to the hype and the opening day numbers of the film are quite disappointing considering that Shamshera released on over 4350 screens. It is not a great figure for something mounted on a reported budget of Rs 150 crore.
Trade analyst Joginder Tuteja told IndiaToday.in that Shamshera needs to collect at least Rs 50 crore during its three-day extended weekend to live up to trade expectations. “Shamshera needs to do at least Rs 50 crore during the opening three days to meet expectations,” he said.
Meanwhile, here is a look at how Ranbir Kapoor’s last five films fared over their respective first weekends.
The Rajkumar Hirani-directed movie, which featured Ranbir Kapoor, collected Rs 120 crore during its first weekend. It delivered record figures for a Ranbir movie. The biographical drama, shot on a budget of Rs 100 crore, raked in Rs 342.57 crore during its run to emerge as a blockbuster. Sanju had an impressive cast that included Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharna, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, and Dia Mirza.
Anurag Basu’s magnum opus Jagga Jasoor, which featured Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, raked in Rs 33 crore during its opening weekend. However, it failed to keep the momentum going over the weekdays. Jagga Jasoos was eventually declared a 'box office bomb' as it collected Rs 54 crore on a budget of Rs 131 crore.
The Karan Johar-directed romantic drama collected Rs 35.6 crore during its first weekend despite releasing alongside Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay. The film went on to collect Rs 112.8 crore during its run to emerge as a major commercial success. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starred Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the leading ladies opposite Bollywood’s Saawariy’. The cast included Fawad Khan, Lisa Haydon, Imran Abbas and Shah Rukh Khan.
Tamasha, which featured Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead, raked in Rs 38.23 crore during its first three days. The Imtiaz Ali-directed romantic drama collected Rs 67.26 crore during its lifetime. It was made on a budget of Rs 87 crore. It has, however, attained a cult following over the years due to its non-linear narrative and popular soundtrack.
