The only seat that promised a tough contest in the Bengal bypoll was Dinhata in Cooch Behar district. The Trinamool fielded Udayan Guha, an old political warhorse, and he trounced BJP's Ashok Mondal by 1.63 lakh votes. So what changed the ruling party's fortunes in a matter of months?
That the Trinamool Congress would win comfortably in three of the four bypolls in West Bengal was known to all. The only seat that promised a tough contest was Dinhata in Cooch Behar district, considered the bastion of Union minister of state for Home, Nisith Pramanik.
In the assembly elections, Pramanik had defeated Trinamool's Udayan Guha by a slender margin of 57 votes. He later opted to retain his Parliamentary seat. This necessitated the bypoll which political analysts considered a prestige battle for Amit Shah's deputy.
