Rahul Gandhi, who is on a trip to UK at present, connected members of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) UK with his mother Sonia Gandhi over a ‘surprise’ phone call on Saturday.
During the call, Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked the overseas party workers to work hard to help the Opposition in the upcoming elections.
At the meeting with Rahul Gandhi, IOC UK workers discussed party-related matters and aired their concerns. Rahul Gandhi reiterated his stance that the party is geared up for an ideological fight in India.
“He said we are not fighting against any one political organisation but against a harmful ideology and to protect the institutions of the country,” an IOC UK spokesperson said.
At the meeting, IOC UK President Kamal Dhaliwal and other team members urged Rahul Gandhi to take over presidency of the party so the Congress can "come into power under his leadership".
In the interaction, IOC Telangana team members, spokesperson Sudhakar Goud and general secretary Gampa Venugopal expressed their gratitude to Sonia Gandhi for the formation of the state in 2014. She called on them to "work hard to win the Telangana state elections".
The Telangana Assembly election will be held next year.
