DOHA: Qatar University (QU) has launched a Writers Club to develop student writers from the university. The Club will be conducting workshops where members can gain fundamental knowledge to develop their skills. It would also create fun online content that can be useful to get a deeper understanding of writing, and online exposure for the writers’ work. The Club’s website would allow members to upload short stories, poems, and other works. The Club held its first workshop on September 6 and 8, titled ‘Fiction Writing Workshop.’ The workshop discussed story structures, narrative styles, and writing meaningful characters. Also, a ‘Screenwriting Workshop’ yesterday (September 20) introduced members to the process of writing screenplays for movies and TV shows. The main talking points included story structures, screenplay format, story outlining techniques, and software recommendations. The final workshop of the semester, ‘Worldbuilding Workshop,’ would hold on October 4 and 6. It would cover worldbuilding in various forms of fiction. President of QU’s Writers Club, Muhammed Amjad Abdushakkoor, said, “No one can be a prolific writer without writing. So, the main goal of the Club is to make the students write. Every great author has practiced their writing for many years before they released their first bestsellers. Therefore, ignoring that journey would be a crime.” Faculty Advisor and Lecturer of English at Foundation Program, David Pearson, said: “Writing is a superpower. You can leap tall buildings with your imagination and knock people out with your ideas. I am very pleased by the creation of the Writing Club. All members should please remember that the workshop and writing content must comply with Qatar University and community culture and traditions.”
