A police officer in Pune opened fire into the air after a miscreant who had entered into an unoccupied apartment threw a sickle and stones at him. A sub-inspector from the Market Yard police fired a round from his service pistol in retaliation when one of the four burlars hurled a chopper at him. The burglars also hurled stones and sticks at the policemen to stop the cops from chasing them.
The incident happened at the Sonia Apartments on Pune-Satara road when four burglars attempted robbery. At least four burglars attempted to flee from the spot after they were caught and attacked the police by hurling a sickle and stones at the officer, prompting him to open fire in the air, reported TOI. Neither the cops nor the burglars were hurt in the incident.
The security guard of a residential society in Chaphalkar Colony located in the city's Satara Road noticed some burglars breaking into the apartment in the wee hours of Wednesday. The guard immediately contacted the society's chairman and the police were alerted.
The burglars managed to enter the apartment during the early morning hours today when the watchman was sleeping. The watchman woke up on hearing the noise caused by equipment used for breaking open the flat, DCP Namrata Patil told TOI.
When the police men approached the apartment, the thieves tried to run away and on being chased, they hurled a sickle and stones towards them.
"The suspects had managed to break into an apartment that was yet to be occupied. We are working on various leads to identify and arrest them," reported the Indian Express quoting Senior Inspector Anagha Deshpande of the Marketyard police station as saying.
Police constables and sub-inpector Yuvraj Shinde rushed to the apartment as the guard raised an alarm. Patil said that the police asked the burglars to come out and surrender. But the burglars started pelting stones at the cops while running towards the rear end of the building to jump over a compound wall close to a drain.
