
Protests break out in Russia, over 500 detained as Putin orders partial military call-up

Police officials have detained several agitating civilians in Russia following the announcement of partial mobilisation.
In a crackdown on anti-war protests across major cities in Russia, more than 500 people have been detained, according to the independent monitoring group OVD-Info.
Around 100 arrests were made during agitation in St Petersburg after President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilisation to increase troops for the war in Ukraine.
Photos released on OVD-Info's Telegram channel showcased police in St Petersburg bashing protesters with sticks. Videos from the protest areas show cops trying to keep a mob at Isakiivskiy Cathedral behind barriers, amid slogans of no mobilisation.
A social media video collected by CNN showed protests in different cities involving a few dozen people.

In videos from Moscow, agitators were seen being carried away by the police in the center of the city.
One video posted by a journalist from the Moscow web publication, The Village, includes several people in Arbatskaya street sloganeering, “let him go”, as one man is carried away.
